Derby Day

This year for the Derby it ended up being a girls brunch. We made friends with the our wonderful waiter Nick, and drank way to many Mint Juleps to keep it classy. Horse #16 came through for the win, which made the day even better.

Next up: Preakness.

Derby Countdown

Triple crown season is upon us. May 4th marks the  139th Kentucky Derby. To get you in the spirit here are (5) derby drink recipes to try out at home.

Southern Mint Julep
1 glass of Bourbon
4 sprigs fresh mint
1/2 tbsp. powdered sugar

In a julep cup, crush the mint leaves and sugar lightly together, add bourbon and fill glass with cracked ice; stir gently until cup is frosted. Decorate on top with 3 sprigs of mint.

Champagne Julep
1 lump sugar
2 sprigs mint
Use long tumbler

Fill glass with champagne. Stir gently and decorate with slices of fruit in season.

Derby
Mix together:
2 parts Scotch Whiskey
1 part honey
1 part grapefruit juice

Smashes
The "smash" is in effect a julep on a small plan. To prepare it the following recipe is usually used:

In a medium-size glass:
Dissolve 1 lump of sugar
Add 4 leaves of green mint, and crush mint and sugar very lightly together
Place lump of ice in glass
Then add one small glass of either Bacardi rum, brandy, gin, Irish whiskey, or Scotch whiskey as fancy dictates.

Decorate with a slice of orange, and squeeze lemon peel on top.

Pimm's Cup
Ingredients
¼ oz. demerara sugar syrup (2:1 sugar/water ratio)
3 lemon (cut into wedges)
3 lime (cut into wedges)
6 orange (cut into wedges)
2 oz. Pimm’s No. 1
Club soda

In a metal shaker, combine demerara syrup and citrus wedges, and crush with a wooden muddler. Add Pimm’s and a couple of ice cubes, and shake well. Strain into an ice-filled highball glass and fill to the rim with club soda. Stir to combine and serve.

Rope Art

I walked by Madison Square Park the other day only to find this pretty cool rope sculpture. The artist is Orly Genger a name I hadn't known but whose work I recognize. Orly has done jewelry collaborations with companies such as J.crew, Lela Rose, and VPL. Check out her company OGJM, and Orly's exhibit beginning on May 2nd in Madison Sq. Park.

Sunday Adventure

This past Sunday a few friends and I decided to take a subway adventure to Coney Island which took us 1 hour to long to arrive (thanks F train). It was opening day and definitely not Spring weather. Having too much fun on Saturday night, we didn't go on any rides but opted for a walk along the beach; excited just to be near an ocean!

Morning Sun

I went home a few weeks ago to upstate New York. There is nothing like the morning sun shinning and an open road.

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day landed on Sunday this year, which meant for many a weekend long celebration of all things Irish. Unlike some I took it easy this year, and opted to go out for an almost Irish meal which consisted of a Polish Plate (pierogies & sauerkraut YUM!) from Greenpoint and a pint of Guinness with friends.

Pi Day

3.14=Pi Day=March 14th

I've never been one for math but always one for a festive celebration so in honor Pi day I decided to baked mini apple pies. I have to say ( and have tasters to vouch) they didn't turn out half bad for my first time making them. I sort of winged it taking bits and pieces from different recipes of the web. There are definitely some things I can change/add for the next time.
